Fearless Kelly a superhero

- by Grace Macaskill

THIS is how the world will remember fearless terror attack victim Kelly Brewster – who sacrificed her life to save her sister and niece.

Kelly has been dubbed a “superhero” by friends and family just months after she dressed as one at a fancy dress party.

The 32-year-old, seen here posing as Robin last Halloween, died acting as a human shield for sister Claire, 33, and niece Hollie, 12, on Monday.

The image represents her happiness and heroism in life and death – and the defiance of her family who will for ever be proud of Kelly’s bravery.

Hollie’s gran Tracy Booth said: “I wouldn’t have my granddaughter if not for her. She was a superhero. I’m devastated about Kelly’s death. I will be indebted to her the rest of my life.”

Impact

Kelly’s uncle Paul Dryhurst added: “The three were walking out in single file, with Claire in front, Hollie behind her and Kelly behind her.

“When the bomb went off the impact broke Claire’s jaw and Hollie’s legs. They are in hospital having nuts and bolts removed. After the impact Claire had gone to Hollie but when she looked up she couldn’t find Kelly.”

Heartbreakingly, her boyfriend Ian Winslow added: “I just wish Kelly was still here.”

The civil servant was renowned for helping others and in a world of horrors like Monday night, her eternal optimism was a source of constant amazement to those around her.

She loved to party. Two years before the Halloween bash where she dressed as a superhero, it was at her own 30th birthday party that she met Ian through mutual friends.

He said: “I knew she was the one for me. She was a beautiful, kind person who loved life in general and loved music and travelling.”

And nights out like the concert on Monday were what she lived for.

Kelly, who was trying for a baby of her own when she died, was described by her friends as a “warm, friendly and smiley” girl – everything that stands against the terror driven by Islamic State and jihadists like Abedi.
