Companion plants used to their full effect are a fantastic aid to anyone who wants to garden organicall­y.

Get it right and you will not need to rely on chemicals to fight pests and diseases.

And the plants will be an invitation to visitors we all want – such as pollinatin­g bees and butterflie­s.

Yellow fever

Plant yellow-coloured flowering plants such as the poached egg plant, marigolds and sunflowers and you will attract pest-eating predators like hoverflies, ladybirds and lacewings.

The scent of marigolds is hated by many pests so it also makes a great companion plant for a tomato crop.

Root crops can benefit too because its roots produce a chemical that repels nematodes.
