Phelps to race Jaws
OLYMPIC swimming hero Michael Phelps is in for the race of his life – against a great white shark.
The most successful Olympian of all time will square up to a giant shark for a TV special next month.
Shark Week promises “the world’s most decorated athlete takes on the ocean’s most efficient predator”.
American Phelps, 31, has 23 Olympic golds and retired after Rio 2016. He has a top speed of six miles per hour in the water. A great white can hit 25mph.
It will be shown on the Discovery Channel, kicking off on July 23. Marine expert Tooni Mahto said what form the race will take “is anyone’s guess”.
She told Radio 5 Live: “We can be fairly certain it won’t be Phelps v a great white in a swimming pool.”
