This crescent-shaped bay in Gran Canaria is a secret getaway – particularly for the Scandinavians who flock here in winter.

It is easy to see why. The cobbled streets are incredibly cute, with pink bougainvillea tumbling from arches.

Locals claim their fishing village, 45 minutes from the airport, has the island’s best weather.

Brits are finally getting on board. Summer is low season here and can be a great time to bag a bargain.

Dreaming of a week of R&R, my partner Ian and I headed to Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, a four-star resort set in botanical gardens.

There are nearly 500 rooms but the sprawling layout meant there were plenty of quiet spots for laidback snoozes in the sun.

The accommodation has a TripAdvisor certificate of excellence for its consistently great reviews. It was soon clear why – from the receptionist to the friendly chap taking us to our room, service was impeccable.

With our flight to the island delayed, we had missed dinner by the time we arrived. No need to DINE in Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa’s a la carte restaurant Los Guayres, one of the island’s best. Pack high-factor sun cream. The Canaries may belong to Spain but are closer to Africa. Mix pool time with enjoying Puerto De Mogán’s golden sands. Two loungers and an umbrella cost £6.50 to hire. Quite a few restaurants in Puerto de Mogán close for the summer because winter trade is so good. There is still plenty of choice, though.
