A PERVERT who raped a toddler and left the victim psychologically scarred has walked free from court.

John Mason, 51, sexually abused the boy during the early Eighties and the crime was reported in 2015.

He admitted a serious indecent assault which today would carry a life sentence. Those charged for historical offences can only be punished under the law of the time, and the maximum then was just three months.

Judge Denis Watson QC said i t would be “a ridiculously short sentence” and opted for a community order. Mason, of Banff, Aberdeenshire, must also register as a sex criminal.

The prosecution told Liverpool Crown Court the victim “suffered nightmares and bed-wetting”.
