£500 fines for lost dog

DOG owners have been slapped with £ 500 court bills after failing to get pets microchipped – which can cost as little as £15.

In April last year the law changed, meaning all dogs must be chipped to help trace owners of strays picked up by councils.

Town halls are now launching a wave of prosecutions against “irresponsible” owners.

In Coventry alone, 18 have been prosecuted and given 21 days to have their dog microchipped. Some were fined £200, plus £278 costs as well as a £30 victim surcharge by magistrates.

Council animal welfare manager Phil Hibberd said: “We collect around 600 dogs per year. It costs the council large amounts of public funds dealing with stray and unclaimed dogs.”
