Barcelona rally calls

THOUSANDS backing Catalonia’s bid to secede from Spain staged a rally in Barcelona yesterday to demand the release of ten jailed separatist leaders.

Eight former members of Catalonia’s dissolved cabinet and two activists have been locked up while investigations continue into their alleged roles in last month’s illegal declaration of independence.

Polls show Catalonia’s 7.5 million residents include many who would prefer to remain part of Spain.
