Hon­our for ale brewer

A SOL­DIER who made ale for home­sick com­rades in the First World War is be­ing hon­oured in Bel­gium 100 years af­ter his first brew.

Sgt Jack Payne, from Shep­reth, Cambs, named his Silly Scotch Ale af­ter the Bel­gian town of Silly, where he was sta­tioned with the Suf­folk Reg­i­ment.

Brew­ery owner Ber­trand Van Der Hae­gen said: “Jack wasn’t a brewer, but he knew how it should taste.”

Fam­ily from the UK joined oth­ers at the brew­ery to toast his mem­ory.
