Bogus tax calls alert
FRAUDSTERS are “cloning” the taxman’s phone number to frighten victims into paying bogus debts.
The scammers leave voice messages telling people they are being summonsed and to press a number to speak to an HMRC “case worker”.
The number the tricksters are using is a cloned official HMRC helpline.
Calls have been reported to police nationwide.
Retired House of Commons worker Stephen Harrison, 63, of North London, said: “They told me there was an arrest warrant issued against me. It is very worrying.”
HMRC said: “We will never call you out of the blue asking for money.”
