Post Office switch fury
ANGRY MPS want answers from the Government over the “privatisation” of town centre post offices.
The state-owned network plans to transfer 40 of its Crown post offices to Whsmith to cut costs.
Whsmith will also take over 34 existing counters in its shops which the Post Office currently runs.
Labour MP Gill Furniss, head of the all-party parliamentary group on post offices, wants a Commons debate amid fears the move will damage the service.
The plan will leave Whsmith running 208 post office counters on a franchise basis out of a network of 11,500 post offices. The network has shrunk from 18,000 since 2009.
