QAre hamsters the only creatures that store food in the pouches of their cheeks? Ms M.D., Cheshire.
AIt’s not just hamsters that store food in this way. Chipmunks and most ground squirrels also do this. It’s a great way to keep their hoard safe until they find a place to hide it. Macaque monkeys also have handy food pouches, ensuring they can carry their prized food securely until they find a safe place to eat it without being forced to share! Surprisingly, perhaps, although gerbils look very similar to hamsters, they don’t have cheek pouches.
