Waterloo Bridge

The People's Friend - - Heritage -

● The bridge was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed the iconic red telephone boxes, as well as Battersea Power Station, Bankside Power Station (now Tate Modern) and Liverpool Cathedral.

● It was the first reinforced concrete bridge over the Thames in central London.

● The bridge is clad in Portland stone, which has the useful property of cleaning itself when it rains.

● The Kinks hit single “Waterloo Sunset” was partly inspired by the bridge; it was where, in his teens, songwriter Ray Davies used to go for romantic walks with his girlfriend.
