The People's Friend

Q. My fifty-year-old husband has been diagnosed with younger onset dementia. Is there any help with coming to terms with this?

- Dr Tim Beanland, Knowledge Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, is here to help.

I am so sorry to hear that your husband has been diagnosed with dementia. We know that a diagnosis of younger onset dementia can be particularly difficult. Alzheimer’s Society offers a range of services to help you both live with your husband’s diagnosis.

People tell us that speaking to others going through the same experience can be vitally important for coming to terms with it, so our younger onset support groups could be a great help.

Our Dementia Advisors offer invaluable support, as does our befriending service, Side by Side, which enables people with dementia to continue doing the things they love with the support of a volunteer.

Call our helpline to find out more on 0300 222 11 22 or visit www.alzheimers.org.uk.

As Alzheimer’s Society launches its United Against Dementia campaign calling on society to unite against dementia, I would encourage you both to speak about the experience and your fears to family, friends and colleagues whom you trust, and who may be able to support you.
