Dead device

-

A computer, phone or tablet that’s no longer working presents a real problem because, in the right hands, the data it contains might still be accessible.

A computer expert local to your area might be able to erase the data by physically removing the storage media, or they might be able to repair the device sufficiently for it to be powered up so it can be wiped. Look in newsagents’ windows or the local press for adverts.

Alternatively, with a PC or laptop, you could disassemble the computer and remove the hard disk before hitting the disk very hard several times with a hammer. It might sound extreme, but this is a common method of ensuring nobody can access old data. Don’t try to destroy phones or tablets in this way, however, because they contain batteries that not only explode if damaged but could also release toxic gasses.
