Strange as it might sound, seaweed is actually a fantastic source of omega-3 fatty acids which are essential for brain and joint health – in fact, we absorb the omega-3s from seaweed (or marine algae) far more efficiently than we do from leafy green vegetables, nuts and seeds.

Seaweed is rich in iodine, iron, vitamin C (which aids iron absorption), antioxidants, fibre, vitamin K and vitamin B-12.

Although it’s not always easy to find seaweed in the shops (samphire season is typically June to August) you can boost your nutrient intake by crumbling nori sheets (sold in the “world food” aisles of larger supermarkets to wrap sushi rolls) into soups and stews, adding a delicious salty flavour.
