Ac­tual size: 99 (39), 112 (44), 122 (48), 125 (49¼), 130 (51). Length: 65 cm (25½ ins), 66 (26), 67 (26¼), 68 (26¾), 68 (26¾). Sleeve length: 44 cm (17½ ins), 46 (18), 47 (18½), 48 (18¾), 48 (18¾).

MA­TE­RI­ALS

8 (9, 9, 10, 10) 50-gram balls of

UK Al­paca Su­perfine DK in Wine ( M) and 2 50-gram balls in Parch­ment ( C). One pair each 3.75 mm (No. 9) and 4.5 mm (No. 7) knit­ting nee­dles.

Hat: to knit the hat, you will need an ex­tra ball of both yarns plus one more if you add a pom-pom. You will also need 3.75 mm and 4.5 mm cir­cu­lar nee­dles and a set of four dou­ble pointed 4.5 mm nee­dles. De­tails of how to or­der the yarn are in the of­fer box on page 74.

TEN­SION

20 sts and 27 rows to 10 cm mea­sured over snowflake pat­tern us­ing 4.5 mm nee­dles.

With 3.75 mm nee­dles and M, cast on 98 (110, 118, 126, 138) sts.

Ist rib row – [K2, P2] un­til 2 sts rem, K2.

2nd rib row – [P2, K2] un­til 2 sts rem, P2.

Rep last 2 rows 7 times more. Change to 4.5 mm nee­dles. Next (right-side) row – Knit in­creas­ing 0 (0, 2, 2, 0) sts across row – 98 (110, 120, 128, 138) sts. Next row – Purl.

Place al­paca chart (overleaf): Ist row – K4 (7, 3, 7, 8)M, K18 sts from chart, ★ K6 (8, 6, 6, 8)M, K18 sts from chart ★ , rep from ★ un­til 4 (7, 3, 7, 8) sts rem, K4 (7, 3, 7, 8). Con­tinue in pat­tern as set un­til all 29 rows of chart have been worked.

Be­gin­ning with a purl row, work 3 rows in st-st and M. Place snowflakes thus:

Next row – P3 (4, 2, 3, 2)M, ★ P1C, P5M, rep from ★ un­til 5 (4, 4, 5, 4) sts rem, P1C, P4 (3, 3, 4, 3)M. Be­gin­ning with a knit row, work 2 rows in st-st and M. Shape neck – Pat­tern across 20 (22, 24, 24, 26) sts, turn, leave rem sts on a holder. Dec 1 st at neck edge on next 4 rows – 16 (18, 20, 20, 22) sts. Work one row straight. Shape shoul­der – Cast off 5 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts at beg of next and foll alt row – 6 sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

With right side fac­ing, slip cen­tre 30 (30, 34, 36, 40) sts on to a stitch-holder. Re­join yarn and work to end of row. Work re­main­ing sts to match right side, re­vers­ing shap­ings.

FRONT

Work as given for back to ★★ . Work straight un­til 16 rows less have been worked than back to the be­gin­ning of shoul­der shap­ing, end­ing af­ter a wrong-side row.

Shape neck – Pat­tern 26 (28, 30, 32, 34) sts, turn leav­ing rem sts on a holder. Work­ing on this set of sts only and keep­ing pat­tern cor­rect, dec 1 st at neck edge of next 6 (7, 7, 8, 8) rows and then on fol­low­ing 4 (3, 3, 4, 4) alt rows – 16 (18, 20, 20, 22) sts. Con­tinue straight in pat­tern un­til work matches back to shoul­der shap­ing, end­ing af­ter a wrong-side row.

Shape shoul­der – Cast off 5 (6, 7, 7, 8) sts at beg of next and foll alt row – 6 sts. Work 1 row. Cast off.

With right side fac­ing, slip cen­tre 18 (18, 22, 20, 24) sts on to a stitch-holder. Re­join yarn to rem 26 (28, 30, 32, 34) sts and pat­tern to end. Com­plete to match first side, re­vers­ing shap­ings.

SLEEVES

With 3.75 mm nee­dles and M, cast on 50 (54, 54, 54, 58) sts.

Next row – Work in rib as given for back un­til 16 rows have been worked, end­ing af­ter a wrong-side row and in­creas­ing 1st at each end of the last row – 52 (56, 56, 56, 60) sts.

Change to 4.5 mm nee­dles. Be­gin­ning with a knit (right­side) row, work in st-st, in­creas­ing 1 st at each end of next row and then every foll 10th (10th, 6th, 6th, 6th) row un­til there are 68 (72, 82, 86, 88) sts.

Con­tinue straight un­til sleeve measures 46 (47, 48, 49 51) cm, or length re­quired, end­ing af­ter a wrong-side row. Shape top – Cast off 5 (6, 7, 7, 7) sts at the beg of next row and foll alt row – 58 (60, 68, 72, 74) sts.

Dec 1 st at each end of next 4 (6, 6, 8, 9) rows, then dec 1 st at each end of the foll 2 alt rows, and then every foll 4th row un­til there are 38 (36, 44, 44, 44) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of the next 3 (2, 4, 2, 2) foll alt rows – 32 (32, 36, 40, 40) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of the next 4 (4, 6, 8, 8) rows – 24 sts.

Cast off 4 sts at the beg of next 2 rows – 16 sts. Cast off.

TO COM­PLETE

Neck­band – With right sides fac­ing, join right shoul­der seam us­ing a mat­tress stitch. With 3.75 mm nee­dles, M, and right side fac­ing, pick up and knit 19 sts down left side of front neck, knit across 18 (18, 22, 20, 24) sts on front holder, pick up and knit 19 sts up right side of front and 6 sts down right side of back neck, knit 30 (30, 34, 36, 40) sts on back holder, finally pick up and knit 6 sts up left side of back neck – 98 (98, 106, 106, 114) sts. Beg with a 2nd rib row, work in rib as given for back un­til work

measures 2.5 cm, end­ing af­ter a wrong-side row.

Cast off in rib.

To Make Up – Join left shoul­der and neck­band seams. Insert sleeves by plac­ing the cen­tre of cast-off edge to top of shoul­der seam and then ease sleeve into arm­hole and sew in place. Join side seams. ■
