ELDERLY residents at a Werrington sheltered housing scheme have experienced their fair share of anniversaries and birthdays over the years.

But on Friday they joined together to celebrate a special silver anniversary for the housing scheme where they live, which has turned from simple bricks and mortar into a thriving community.

Sutton Court, next to Werrington Centre, off Skaters Way, first opened on May 29, 1985.

The honour of cutting the ribbon was given to Her Royal Highness Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester and now, 25 years on, residents held a special party to mark its birthday.

The residents had a buffet, an an- niversary cake and prize bingo and invited local councillors, as well as staff from housing association Minster Housing, to join in the festivities.

Deputy Mayor of Peterborough Bella Saltmarsh said she had been delighted to attend the event. She said: “It was lovely and all the residents really enjoyed the day.

“It was really interesting, as a lot of them were not from Peterborough originally but had moved here and then decided to stay.

“It was fascinating talking to Dora Greenwood, who at 95 is still full of sparkle and, as she used to be a magistrate, she understood a lot about the roles of councillor and mayor.

“They all loved living at the scheme and they were full of praise for the scheme manager there as well.”

Sutton Court was purpose built by Minster Housing and the council’s social services department for older people and is a home for 26 residents and a residents’ scheme manager.

There is a range of social activities held in the communal lounge, such as dominoes and cream teas and there is also a meal service each lunch time for residents who are unable to cook a main meal for themselves.

They also welcome non-residents into the scheme to attend Holy Communion, Werrington Friendship Club and the RNID Drop-In Service and their coffee mornings are open to everyone each Thursday morning, from 10.00am until 11.30am.
