Roads closed in car park roof drama
RUSH-HOUR commuters faced delays on their way home as police worked to stop a woman falling from the top of the Queensgate Centre car park.
Police were forced to close Westgate, between its junction with Bourges Boulevard and the entrance to the Peterborough city bus station, for more than half an hour as the drama unfolded last night.
The woman, who has not been named, was first spotted crouched on the hand railings at the top of the 100ft car park on the Westgate side of the bus station at 5pm.
Two police officers spent more than half an hour talking to her before they pulled her in as she teetered dangerously over the edge of the roof.
She was then arrested and taken to Thorpe Wood Police Station for questioning.
Hackney taxi-driver Nasa Khan, who witnessed the drama, said he spotted the woman up on the roof from his position at the taxi rank in Westgate and dialled for the emergency services.
He said: “I saw her up on the ledge and there was a moment when I thought she had gone as it was slippery.
“She kept ringing someone then putting the phone down and then smoking.
“It’s the same spot where people have fallen before so it is scary to see someone up there and it was worrying.”
Other bystanders said they thought the woman was arguing with somebody on the phone while she peered down at the floor below. Police allowed the buses that were already in the station to leave from Westgate with their passengers but a number of buses were diverted along Bourges Boulevard and had to enter the station from the Queensgate entrance causing delays.
Many commuters filed out of the station and continued home by foot.
A police spokeswoman said: “We were called at 5.02pm and officers arrived shortly afterwards. We had to close off part of Bourges Boulevard to traffic.”
