Fountains brighten up a dull day
are not going to transform the fortunes of Peterborough city centre overnight.
Nor are they likely to justify their multi-million pound price tag to their critics.
But love them or loathe them, the long-awaited fountains forming the centrepiece of the Cathedral Square renovation certainly turned a few heads yesterday when they were switched on.
They were certainly a major talking point for the thousands strolling through the city centre over the lunchhour, as the jets of water bubbled close to the surface and shot high into the air.
Grown-ups stood and watched, while youngsters darted in and out of the spray.
Smiles all round, and a far cry from the whinging and whining about the building site the city centre has been for so long.
And perhaps it is that reaction which will finally win over the doubters.
As a spectacle they will improve with the weather and hopefully prove a lure to shoppers for the benefit of the city traders.
