Restoring hard-won British freedoms
A Canadian gosling at Ferry Meadows, photographed by ET reader Keith Baron. MAY I first of all thank every one of the thousands of Peterborians who gave their support to the Liberal Democrats in this year’s national and local election? Can I also say a special thank you to the 2000+ people in South Werrington who gave their support to the Lib Dem FOCUS Team, enabling me to carry on working hard for all the residents in the South Werrington and North Gunthorpe Area?
With this mandate in mind, I wanted to let your readers know the Coalition Government have now announced that ID cards are to be scrapped for British citizens within 100 days! Be under no illusions as to the importance of the civil liberty success achievement. The Liberal Democrats have campaigned against the introduction of ID cards since they were first announced by the previous Labour Government.
The wasteful, bureaucratic and intrusive ID card scheme represents everything that has been wrong with government in recent years. By taking swift action to scrap it, the Liberal Democrats are making it clear that this government won’t sacrifice people’s liberty for the sake of Ministers’ pet projects.
Cancelling the scheme and abolishing the National Identity Register is a major step in dismantling the surveillance state - but ID cards are just the tip of the iceberg. This marks the start of a series of radical reforms to restore hard-won British freedoms.
