Putting smiles on faces of shoppers

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Your Telegraph -

THE first full day of operation for Peterborough’s new fountains surprised many.

The reaction of many youngsters, on a warm, sunny day, was spontaneous.

Shoes and socks were ditched and they started playing in the new water feature.

For much of the afternoon the seating areas around the fountains were packed and the square was filled with the noise of laughing children.

Shoppers making their way through stopped to look.

They all had one thing in common... smiles on their faces as they watched the youngsters playing.

With half term activities in Bridge Street and restaurants and cafes busy the city centre was buzzing.

The completion of the work in the square and the St John’s Square area can’t come soon enough.

The debate about disruption and cost will go on.

But there’s no denying the fountains have already had a positive impact on the ambience of the city centre.
