Berney blasts to the gold and a club record
Local one-lap wonders
JAKE Berney is one of several talented 400m runners on the local scene, and most of them are young so the future looks bright.
Hunts Athletic Club provide the area’s two fastest one-lap wonders so far in 2010, Matthew Leadbitter (22) running 50.70 indoors at the Birmingham Games in February and former English Schools bronze medallist Jordan Gillbanks (16) clocking a personal best of 50.9 in the National Junior League last month.
Gillbanks’ time was all the more remarkable given he missed virtually all of 2009 with an injury that required an operation and it seems likely he will go on to break the club Under 17 record of 49.50 set by Colin Burton in 1980.
The rest of the local top 10 consist of seven Nene Valley Harriers plus Berney. Only one of the 10, 400m hurdler Sean Reidy (29), is older than 23.
Polish youngster Lukasz Bezulski (15) is the fastest of the Nene Valley athletes with 51.11 set indoors - despite, like Gillbanks, having missed much of last year - while Darrellon Holding (17) has the potential to go much quicker than the 51.27 he ran at the weekend.
He is already the fastest Nene Valley Harrier in history with the 49.33 he ran to reach the English Schools final last year and he should progress into sub-49 territory this summer.
