City firm in semis at big sevens event
A CITY-BASED team reached the semi-finals of the big Bournemouth Sevens tournament at the weekend.
Paul Cullington, managing director of Orton Southgate firm Kitsports, an online shop and teamwear company, put a star-studded team together in the top National Invitation Cup section and they did well to reach the last four.
Wins against McCallum Scorpions (27-5) and Sappers (37-0) saw them win their group and they then overcame Wii Fit Plus All Stars 27-5 in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately they came up against tournament favourites and eventual winners The Army in the semis and lost 35-5.
The side was managed by the former Cambridge director of rugby James Shanahan and included Peterborough-based Darren Fox (147 appearances for Northampton Saints), Peterborough fly-half Duncan Low and an array of talent from Newcastle Falcons, Exeter Chiefs, Blaydon, Birmingham Solihull and Cambridge.
Cullington said: “It was an absolutely amazing experience. The standard of play was top class and the atmosphere was terrific, as you’d expect from a crowd of 20,000.
“The general opinion was that our semi-final against The Army would have made a great final but that’s the luck of the draw.
“I was delighted with the team’s performance in such a big sevens competition and we are very much looking forward to competing in this tournament next year.”
Bill Wilson of Muscle Finesse in Rivergate, Peterborough, was a team sponsor.
