WES WOULD HAVE BEEN A SUPERSTAR
GARY Johnson reckons his latest recruit James Wesolowski would already be a footballing superstar, but for cruel luck with injuries.
Posh signed the 22 year-old Aussie for a nominal fee from Leicester City earlier this week, but the Posh manager revealed that he’d been tracking the midfielder for five years.
Wesolowski has suffered two broken legs in his career after breaking into the Leicester first team as a 17 year-old. He proved his fitness by playing successfully for Hamilton in the Scottish Premier League last season.
Johnson said: “Everyone thought he was the next superstar five or six years ago and I believe he would be a top player already if he hadn’t suffered a couple of bad injuries.
“I have always kept an eye on his progress since then and I don’t think I am the only one. I know lots of clubs, including ones in the Championship and in the Scottish Premier League, who were interested in him so I’m delighted to have got him.
“I have a good memory for players who play well against my team and James falls into that category.
“He’s everything I want in a midfielder. He works hard, but he’s also got good abil- ity on the ball.
“His commitment and passion are first class. He will break up play, but he will also provide an attacking threat.
“I now have James and Grant McCann to play in central midfield with good players like Lee Frecklington, Josh Simpson and Charlie Lee in support.
“I’m very happy with that combination. In fact if we didn’t sign any more players before we return to training I’d say we have definitely improved the squad.
“Of course the proof of the pudding will be in the eating. We can all talk a good game.”
Wesolowski is Johnson’s fourth signing of the summer after McCann, striker Dave Hibbert and right-back Mark Little.
Posh are still chasing other players including a youngster with a Premier League club who would arrive on a season-long loan.
Johnson added: “I’m interested in a couple of young lads. You won’t have heard of them now, but once they start playing for us they will soon become well known.”
