Concern over proposal to close surgery
AN outraged city councillor has hit out at the decision to close a city centre doctors’ surgery.
The Millfield Surgery, in Searjeant Street, Peterborough, will close at the end of July, following a review by NHS Peterborough.
The surgery has been run by Westgate Surgery – based at the top of Boots in Queensgate Shopping Centre – since the Millfield Surgery general practitioner resigned in 2007.
However, the contract for this arrangement is due to end in July and NHS Peterborough has decided not to renew it, meaning Millfield Surgery will close.
However, the move has been met with anger by Central ward councillor Nazim Khan, who is blaming the decision on the primary care trust’s cost-cutting plans to claw back its £12.8 million overspend.
Cllr Khan said: “It’s an outrage. The elderly and disabled are being squeezed due to mistakes and overspending.”
He said patients would not be able to use the nearby Millfield Medical Centre, in St Martin’s Street, as it is “over-subscribed” already.
NHS Peterborough has denied that Millfield Surgery is closing as a direct result of their overspend but admit it ties in with their Turnaround Plan – a host of measures to save millions of pounds, which were unveiled last month.
They also said that Millfield Medical Centre is taking new patients, despite Cllr Khan’s claims.
Director of performance and contracts at NHS Peterborough, Sarah Shuttlewood, said: “In line with our normal contract review processes we review each contract prior to its end date.
“We were reviewing the viability of Millfield Surgery in January, with the purpose of ensuring patients receive high quality GP access in the most cost effective manner. Dispersing the surgery will achieve both of these and has contributed towards the Turnaround Plan and is in line with our five-year strategic plan.”
By the end of July, patients of Millfield Surgery need to register another GP practice and the PCT said they will have a choice of any in the city. Anyone who does not register with a different practice by the end of July will be automatically moved over to the Westgate Surgery.
An event is being held on June 22 at the Town Hall, in Bridge Street, from 6pm to 7.30pm, where patients cam meet staff from a wide range of GP practices and learn about the services they offer.
