DARRAGH’S DELIGHTED WITH NEW POSH BOSS
DARRAGH MacAnthony is already convinced that Gary Johnson will be a better appointment as Posh manager than Darren Ferguson.
The Posh chairman has been impressed with the quality of player already attracted to London Road by Johnson. Posh have beaten off opposition from Championship clubs to sign midfielders Grant McCann and James Wesolowski this summer.
Striker Dave Hibbert and rightback Mark Little have also moved to Posh since the end of last season. All four new signings insisted the presence of Johnson at Posh was a factor in their moves to the club.
McAnthony today described Johnson as his ‘best appointment’ and he is convinced that the League One title will be in reach for the club’s new-look team.
Ferguson steered Posh to back- to-back promotions, but left the club when they slumped to the bottom of the Championship last November.
MacAnthony said: “In my opinion Gary is the best appointment yet. The fella is a true pro and a proper tracksuit manager which will make a nice change.
“Also what I love about him is that every player he signs, he has the Championship in mind for them as well.
“By the time pre-season starts we will have nine new additions in total and a hell of a 22-man squad to challenge any team in League One.
“We are not having a go at going back up, we are going flat out for the title and I mean that.”
Johnson, who moved into the London Road hotseat towards the end of April, has been flattered by the praise aimed at him by his new recruits.
He revealed that he likes to interview prospective new players to make sure that they will be able to get on with each other.
Johnson said: ”I do my homework on all the players that we sign. I also like to interview them in depth as it’s important I know their characters.
“It’s good to hear that they want to work with me and to be fair it’s been a pretty good month for the club.
“All the players we have targeted have signed for us - it’s definitely a case of so far, so good,”
Posh are hoping to announce the capture of a young winger currently at a Premier League club.
POSH Reserves will play at Corby Town in the Northamptonshire FA’s Maunsell Cup on Sunday, August 1.
Other reserve team friendlies have been confirmed at Histon (Wed, July 21) and Bedford (Wed, July 28).
Histon manager John Beck, who used to work with Posh boss Gary Johnson at Cambridge United, is expected to take Posh academy players on loan to play in the Blue Square Premier Division this season.
