Another tragic loss to local bowls scene
THE local bowls world suffered another tragic loss this week when popular county administrator and player Danny Duffy died suddenly at his home in Woodston at the age of 69.
Although he had been suffering ill health for some time, his death sent shock waves through the local bowls community that had mourned the loss of Peterborough Bowls League chairman Roy Gibson only a week before.
A bowler on the circuit for more than 30 years with South Ward, Peterborough & District and Whittlesey Manor, Danny, and wife Janet, a key administrator in women’s bowling circles, were both former presidents of their respective Northants Bowling Federations and received life memberships for their outstanding dedication to Federation bowling over many years.
Their home in Woodston has been the nerve centre of the Northants Bowling Federation for some time, as the couple, in their roles as competition/results secretaries, received and processed many thousands of results and were key figures in the organisation of the county finals.
Although Danny played Middleton Cup bowls for Hunts and qualified for the national finals at Worthing on three occasions, his real passion was Federation bowls which he served with considerable distinction for more than two decades in various administrative roles, including being the Adams Trophy team captain for a number of seasons.
He’s either supported the county or represented them in the national finals at Skegness every year since 1980 and his presence will be sorely missed, not only by his county colleagues, but by many hundreds of fellow bowlers throughout the other counties who have come to know and respect him over the years.
He was a real gentleman, both on and off the green, who was passionate about his bowls, always positive and encouraging on the green however dire the position.
But although Danny was full of determination and possessed an unquenchable thirst for success, he always remained gracious in defeat.
That admirable quality, coupled with his willingness to work tirelessly behind the scenes for the good of his fellow bowlers, even when his health was a source of concern, means that local bowls will be considerably poorer for his sad passing.
LoCAL bowlers are asked to telephone their Northants Bowling Federation results to Steve Roden on 01406 331002.
A REAL GENTLEMAN: Danny Duffy, who died this week.
