Christophe finishes almost six seconds clear New boy Demoulin scorches to victory
EXPERIENCE told as Christophe Demoulin won the PACTRAC Novice Mini-Series Triathlon at Oundle.
The event is open to newcomers to triathlon or those who have been in the sport for less than a year.
Of the 26 competitors, six took part in the PACTRAC Mini-Series last year and of the remaining 20 who have taken up the sport this year, 17 were tackling their first triathlon. The other three had competed in the opening race of the PACTRAC Mini-Series a week earlier, and all improved on their times.
Demoulin recently joined PACTRAC from Edinburgh University and competed in his first Mini-Series race last week. He has competed in triathlons before this year, albeit not many, and as a new member was allowed to compete.
He led coming out of the pool, holding a 10 seconds advantage over Natasha Johnson, with another 11 seconds to James Walker with Harvey Childs just behind.
Demoulin powered away on the bike, providing the fastest split to go into the run stage four minutes clear.
Josh Gull moved up into second on the bike, just ahead of Harvey, with Oli Laverack moving up to fouth. Johnson, meanwhile, was eighth with her favoured running stage to come.
Demoulin had a storming run to finish in an impressive 51.38 while Gull, a member of Nene Valley Harriers, also ran well to remain second.
Laverack moved up to third on the run while Dominic Burland climbed to a creditable fourth and Johnson finished first woman in fifth overall.
The regular PACTRAC Mini-Series races continue over the next eight Wednesday evenings.
PACTRAC are also organising a children’s duathlon on Tuesday, June 15 as a warm-up race for the Tour Series cycle race in the city centre later in that evening.
They then have a 5k run in conjunction with the Oundle Carnival on Saturday, June 19. Entries will be allowed on the day or can be sent in advance. Details from www.oundlecarnival.co.uk
