SELFLESS volunteers who give up their time and energy to care for terminally ill people at a hospice in Peterborough have been recognised for their dedicated service.

The 30 caring men and women, who received awards for five, 10, 15 and even 20 years’ service, are part of a 300 strong team who regularly help at events, on the wards and in the day centre at Sue Ryder Care’s Thorpe Hall Hospice in Longthorpe, Peterborough.

Judie and David Allen, who began helping at the hospice a year before it opened in 1991, received the very first 20 year awards of service.

Area fundraising manager Becky Hooper said: “In financial terms, the support of this team of generous volunteers is worth £17 million pounds a year in time and support. Without them we simply could not operate as we do.”
