POSH are on the trail of a new centre-back after becoming resigned to losing Welsh international centreback Craig Morgan.

Morgan has advised the club that he wants to move north for personal reasons. He has just one season remaining on his London Road contract so Posh are tempted to cash in on him now rather than let him leave next summer for nothing.

Morgan (24) was born in North Wales and started his professional career at Wrexham. Championship side Preston, who are managed by former Posh boss Darren Ferguson, are expected to table a bid for the player once major shareholder Trevor Hemmings has completed his takeover at the club.

Posh director of football Barry Fry said: “Gary Johnson wants to keep Craig, but he doesn’t think he will be able to so he’s started looking for another centre-half.

“Craig has told the club that he wants to move back up north for family reasons. Preston did show an interest once before but stopped short of making a bid, but they have changed chairmen since then so we will wait and see on that one.”

Morgan won his 20th Welsh international cap in a recent friend-

ly in Croatia. All but one of those caps has been won while at Posh making him the club’s most capped player.

Morgan has made over 100 appearances for Posh and starred in two promotion seasons, He made 33 starts last season as Posh were relegated from the Championship and performed better as the season wore on.

If Morgan was to leave, Posh would have just Gaby Zakuani and Ryan Bennett as specialist senior central defenders, although Charlie Lee can play there.

Posh striker Shaun Batt is expected to complete his transfer to Millwall once returning from his holiday later this week. The clubs have agreed a fee.

Midfielder Toumani Diagouraga appears to be going nowhere for now. Diagouraga dismissed rumours of a move to Barnet by saying he would ‘not drop down to League Two’.

His preferred destination would be League One side Brentford for whom he played successfully on loan last season, but Bees boss Andy Scott claims ‘Posh are asking a ridiculous fee for him’ and that ‘he will not be held to ransom’.
