It could all get rather Messi
DARREN Fletcher reckons things could get rather ‘Messi’ in South Africa!
The BBC broadcaster is tipping Argentina to be crowned world champions for the third time – providing their star-studded players can keep madcap coach Diego Maradona in check.
Fletcher also reckons Holland rank as a decent outside bet and he will see at first-hand how his selections perform with plenty of Group B and Group E dates in his diary.
Fletcher said: “It is easy to tip Spain to win, but they have problems with players like Fernando Torres, Cesc Fabregas and Andres Iniesta. As favourites they have a few questions to answer in my book.
“My tip would be Argentina. I think this is one of the best squads they have had since 1986 and if the players can manage the coach, I’m sure they will go a long way. They have top players all over the park.
“A dark horse could well be Holland who probably possess the most potent front six in world football if Arjen Robben is fit.
“If they can avoid falling out with each other as often happens, and if their goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg can step up to the plate, they could go a long way.”
He clearly fancies Maradona’s men to go all the way, but what does Fletcher think of England’s chances?
“They should get to the quarter-finals and falling short of that would rank as a major disappointment,” he added. “But I can’t see them going much further. If they get to the semis, they will be doing well.
“I just don’t feel we have enough genuine world-class players in the squad.”
