Australian guests give inspiring visit
VISITORS from Down Under brought a dose of sunshine to the city.
The Aussies, from the sun-drenched Gold Coast region just south of Brisbane, came to Peterborough as part of an Australian Friendship Exchange organised by Rotary clubs.
Around 70 guests from the Rotary Club of Peterborough listened to a presentation about life in Oz and were amazed by the events that Australian Rotarians put on to support their local communities, including opera in the vineyard, barbecues and their own Sailability programme for the disabled – similar to the one run at Ferry Meadows.
Then it was the turn of the Peterborough Rotarians to give a colourful talk on the Firework Fiesta, which the club helps to organise in November. Marcus Horrell, whose late father helped found the show in 1975, revealed how the event has raised more than £250,000 in the last 20 years for local charities.
Chairman of Firework Fiesta, John Hill presented cheques to representatives of Peterborough charities benefiting from these funds who had been invited along to share in the celebrations. These included Hospital at Home, Huntingdon and Peterborough MS Therapy Centre and Parkinson’s Society.
