Lucky mum says thanks to donors

BLOOD donors from Peter­bor­ough will be thanked for their life-sav­ing gen­eros­ity. Mother of two and blood re­cip­i­ent Lucy Rands (33), of Sandy, in Bed­ford­shire, will be on hand to thank donors when she at­tends a blood donor ses­sion be­ing held at the Fleet Com­plex, Old Flet­ton, Peter­bor­ough, on Mon­day at 1pm. She will be help­ing to cel­e­brate World Blood Donor Day by meet­ing donors to thank them and en­cour­ag­ing them to con­tinue with their life sav­ing do­na­tions. World Blood Donor Day is a day to say thank you to vol­un­tary blood donors for their con­tri­bu­tion to sav­ing lives. It is cel­e­brated ev­ery year on June 14, the birth­day of Dr Karl Land­steiner, who dis­cov­ered the ABO blood group sys­tem in 1901. Mrs Rands suf­fered with haem­or­rhag­ing dur­ing a mis­car­riage in 2006. She re­ceived eight units of blood to help re­place the large quan­ti­ties she lost. She said: “I wanted to per­son­ally thank blood donors on World Blood Donor Day, as with­out them I would not be here, my chil­dren would be with­out a mother and my hus­band with­out a wife.”
