Mr Underwood’s class of ’58 brings back
THE two photographs we published last week of Fulbridge Road School have proved very popular, with a number of former pupils getting in touch.
We only have space to re-print one photograph this week, we will publish the other one again next week.
This week’s re-cap is of this photograph of Mr Underwood’s class, 4a, when they were leaving the school in 1958.
Angela Hinchliffe wrote in to give us some more names of the pupils, as given to her by her sister, Susan Sturgeon, nee Gutteridge.
Mrs Sturgeon is the third person from the left in the third row down.
Mrs Hinchcliffe wrote: “I also attended the school but was two years younger and wondered if anyone remembers the headmaster, Mr Bailey, giving out to each pupil on their birthday, one penny and allowing them to leave school half an hour early.”
Thanks to Mrs Hinchliffe and Mrs Sturgeon, we now have a pretty complete list of names.
In the back row, from left, are Ian Rollings, Brian Hibbet, Malcolm Wells, David Brown, Ian Hodson, Robert Esling, Michael Oliver, Peter Flemming, Paul Skillings, and an unknown boy.
In the second row down, from left are Terry Curtis, Terry Barks, Angela Laxton, Ruth ?, Felicity Bean, Mr Underwood, Audrey Woods, Jean West, an unknown girl, Richard ? and Vincent Popple. This last chap is proving to be a bit of sticking point, as June Churchill (nee Dandridge), who sent in the photograph, thought this chap was Vincent Popple, Jennifer Runacres, Karen Charles, Helen Asher and Susan Alcock.
In the next row down are Lynda Allen, Janet Bevan, Alison Mould, Rosemary Woolgar, Lynette Gudgeon, Jane Hudson, Diane West, Susan Swain and Jennifer Grainger.
In the front row are Viviene
Challands, Carol Wright, Vivien Allet, Lesley Allis, June Dandridge, Trudy Bunting and Carol Allum.
Thank you to those who wrote in, we will publish more feedback next week. In the meantime, if you can fill in the few gaps left, please get in touch using the contact details at the top of the page.
Vincent, but Mrs Sturgeon thinks another boy is him. Perhaps our readers can help solve the mystery of which boy is Vincent.
On the third row down are Sandra Jennings, Jennifer Stanley, Susan Gutteridge, Elizabeth Reynolds, an unknown boy, Richard Neal, a young man who may or may not be
