Sense and Sensibility (Channel 4, Saturday, 7.10pm)

What’s It About? Jane Austen’s classic tale of two impoverished sisters who find love in unexpected places – although fate seems set to keep their apart from the objects of their affections. Is It Any Good? Emma Thompson is excellent, while Kate Winslet shines in her breakthrough role as her sister. Top-drawer support comes from Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant. Sensitive direction is provided by one of Taiwan’s greatest contemporary film-makers, Ang Lee. Starring: Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant, Greg Wise, Gemma Jones Star Rating: ***** (1995)

Die Hard with a Vengeance (BBC One, Saturday, 11.10pm)

What’s It About? Loosecannon cop John McClane returns to duty following an explosion at a New York City department store. The perpetrator contacts the police and tells them that unless McClane and a bystander, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, carry out a series of instructions, more bombs will be detonated across the city. Is It Any Good? Although not up to the standards of the previous film in the Die Hard franchise, Bruce Willis has enough draw – and drawl – to make complete enjoyment of this action movie something of a no-brainer. It’s great fun. Anything Else? Though McClane is an officer of the NYPD, Die Hard With A Vengeance is actually the only film in the series to be set in New York – and the scene where he has to parade through the ethnic streets of Harlem wearing a sandwich board emblazoned with a racist slogan caused controversy as it was filmed on location in the district. Starring: Bruce Willis, Samuel L Jackson, Jeremy Irons, Graham Greene Star Rating: **** (1995)

Perfect Stranger (Five, Sunday, 9pm)

What’s It About? Halle Berry plays Rowena, a feisty investigative reporter who loves to sink her teeth into the dealings of corrupt businesspeople. She has to call on all her skills as a hack, however, when her friend is murdered, and she is convinced slippery dealer Willis is responsible. She may have the measure of your average dodgy tradesman, but has she got what it takes to outsmart this big fish? Is It Any Good? Berry and Willis thoroughly deserve the paychecks they pocketed for this twisty thriller. What could have been a run-of-the-mill affair is enlivened by great performances from them and the supporting cast. Starring: Halle Berry, Bruce Willis, Giovanni Ribisi, Richard Portnow, Gary Dourdan Star Rating: **** (2007)
