(Group A) THE tournament’s second match brought the first red card - and little else of any note.

Uruguayan substitute Nicolas Lodeiro was the player to claim that unwanted slice of history when being dismissed late on for collecting two cautions in quick succession. Not bad for a man who wasn’t even introduced until the 63rd minute!

That was about as exciting as it got during an uninspiring contest at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town.

Sydney Govou clipped the best French chance wide from six yards on a night when not even the introductions of Chelsea wizard Florent Malouda and Thierry Henry from the bench could spark them into top gear.

Uruguay dangerman Diego Forlan came closest for the South Americans. He twice forced French keeper Hugo Lloris into fine saves as both sides missed the chance to jump to the top of Group A.

Hopefully better fayre will be served up when England play their second game in Group C against Algeria at this venue next Friday.
