Youngsters volunteer at church
A COMMUNITY project to help youngsters with special needs gain independence has proved to a hit at a city church.
Pupils at Marshfields Special School have been volunteering at St John’s Church in Cathedral Square since November.
Their jobs have included cleaning in the church and running a cafe within the building.
Liz Lukeman, head of post 1 at the school in Eastern Close, Dogsthorpe, said: “We are already looking at running the cafe next year.
“It has been great for the youngsters to learn social, independence and work skills.
“This is a really useful exercise, as they run it all themselves.
“Over the year we have had 20 pupils working on the project.”
The cafe raises money for the church’s charity projects.
It is open on Wednesdays each week, between 10am and noon.
