Allotment plans slated during Cabinet meeting
OBJECTIONS to proposals to create two new allotment sites in Peterborough have been heard by councillors.
Criticisms of the plans to turn land at Werrington Paddock and the Gunthorpe Rec, between Gunthorpe Road and Hallfields Lane, into allotments were presented to Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet yesterday.
A petition with several hundred signatures against the sites were collected by Liberal Democrat Councillors Nick Sandford and Darren Fower at the full council meeting in February.
Cllr Sandford was not able to attend the cabinet due to work commitments but submitted his objections to be read out in the meeting.
He said: “There has been massive public opposition to both proposals. The Gunthorpe Rec site has been discussed at two Community Committee meetings, where public opposi- tion to the proposal was also overwhelming.
“I do not know of anyone outside the city council who supports these new allotment proposals and as ward councillor for the Walton ward I fully support both petitions.
“Werrington Paddocks has a very high wildlife value and Gunthorpe Rec is one of the few areas of green space in the area and is much used by local people as an amenity.
“If the cabinet is serious about empowering local communities and neighbourhood councils then it must listen to what local people in my ward and in Werrington South are saying and reject these proposals.”
The council said that a decision had not yet been made about the sites and all viable options were still being assessed.
Cabinet members also recommended that Cllr Sandford come forward with ideas for other locations for allotments.
