Clarion call from the past

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - Hobson's Choice -

THESE young men certainly had the upper gear when it came to pedal power!

A lovely photograph to show on a day when thousands of local people will line the streets, to watch international calibre cyclists race 1.1km across the city centre for the Halfords Tour Series.

Despite not being in the league of world champions, we still think this photograph is fantastic.

Doug Boughton has written in to share his memories. He explained that the young men were part of the Clarion Cycle Club of 1939, with himself second from left, aged almost 17.

He said: “Other names I remember are two brothers by the name of Airey and a young man, second name Maxfield.

“I played football for Perkins Engines and Peter Brotherhoods, captain of both, and lived in Peterborough until 1988 when I moved to Spain. I went for a holiday and stayed for 17 years!”
