Carragher: Forget about avoiding Germany and concentrate on qualifying

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - World Cup -

JAMIE Carragher believes England should focus on qualifying for the next phase of the World Cup rather than worrying about trying to avoid a last-16 clash with in-form Germany.

The Liverpool defender was impressed with the way Germany overcame Australia 4-0 in their opening game and was particularly struck by midfielder Mesut Ozil and striker Miroslav Klose.

The two old rivals would meet in the next phase should Germany win Group D and England finish runners-up in Group C - or vice-versa.

But Carragher is more concerned about Fabio Capello’s side beating Algeria on Friday than any possible permutations in the future.

He said: “Myself, Steven Gerrard, David James and some of the staff watched the Germany game and they were very impressive.

“It is the best performance we have seen at the World Cup al- though Argentina played well without getting the goals.

“Ozil behind the striker was very good, linking the whole team together.

“Klose seems to get a lot of criticism in Germany, being on the bench for Bayern Munich, but he is close to Gerd Muller’s goal record now.

“It was typical Germany. Maybe sometimes on paper you don’t expect too much but, whatever tour- nament comes around, they always do well.”

But Carragher insisted: “I don’t go along with looking at this early stage about who you might play in the next round.

“For me, it is about winning the next game. Germany are the best team so far but it is only one game.

“I don’t think we should be thinking about avoiding this team or that team. The first thing is to make sure we get through.”
