Cyclists take over city centre:
THOUSANDS of people were gripped by pedal power as they lined the streets to watch 50 international calibre cyclists battle it out along a 1.1km circuit route as part of the Tour Series.
Spectators gathered in the city centre last night as world class cyclists competed in the highspeed thrilling road race.
Waving banners and cheering at the top of their voices, people of all ages welcomed the return of the Halfords Tour Series, as the city centre was transformed into a race track.
Ten teams raced for an hour through Cathedral Square, Bridge Street, Bourges Boulevard and Cowgate at speeds of around 30mph – completing a laps every 90 seconds.
Chief executive of the Halfords Tour Series, Hugh Roberts hailed the event a success and hoped to return next year.
He said: “When we first brought the Tour Series to Peterborough last year, everyone showed a great deal of enthusiasm and commitment and the event was delivered very well.
“Peterborough also has a particularly nice route which shows off the city in a very favourable light.”
Mayor of Peterborough councillor Keith Sharp, who officially started the race, said: “It was great to see so many people in the city centre whether they have an interest in cycling or are just watching the race for fun.”
Head of operations at Peterborough City Council Annette Joyce said the council hoped to bring the Tour Series back for a third year, providing they can secure sponsorship.
She said: “This event really instills pride in Peterborough and puts the city firmly on the map. People of Peterborough should be really proud to have this event.”
Council chief executive Gillian Beasley added: “The event is absolutely brilliant. Just looking at people’s faces you can see they are full of interest and excitement.”
Chief executive of Peterborough Chamber of Commerce, John Bridge said: “There is a real vibrancy in the centre of Peterborough. Events like these are of real benefit and a tribute to Peterborough.”
