Pas­sen­ger killed as car and lorry col­lide

A WOMAN has died af­ter the car she was trav­el­ling col­lided head-on with an ar­tic­u­lated lorry on a city road.

The woman, who has not yet been named by po­lice, was the pas­sen­ger in a Vaux­hall As­tra which col­lided with the lorry on Oun­dle Road, at Or­ton Wis­tow, at 2.16pm yes­ter­day.

She died at the scene. The male driver of the car had mi­nor in­juries and the lorry driver was un­hurt.

The East Anglian Air Am­bu­lance flew paramedics and a Mag­pas emer­gency doc­tor to the scene in Oun­dle Road, Or­ton Wis­tow, Peter­bor­ough at 2.16pm yes­ter­day,

How­ever, they were un­able to save the fe­male pas­sen­ger, who was trapped in the wreck­age of a sil­ver Vaux­hall Corsa.

The woman, who has not been iden­ti­fied by po­lice, was pro­nounced dead at the scene.

The male driver of the car was treated at the scene of the crash by paramedics from the am­bu­lance ser­vice and taken to Peter­bor­ough District Hos­pi­tal with mi­nor in­juries.

The driver of the ar­tic­u­lated Del Monte lorry was un­in­jured.

A spokesper­son from the East Anglian Am­bu­lance Ser­vice, said: “We were called to the scene at 2.16pm fol­low­ing a call from the lorry driver.

“We ar­rived to find a head-on col­li­sion had oc­curred be­tween a lorry and a car.

“The male lorry driver was un­in­jured. The male driver of the car was walk­ing around. He had no ob­vi­ous in­juries but was very shaken and was taken to Peter­bor­ough District Hos­pi­tal with mi­nor in­juries.

“The pas­sen­ger of the ve­hi­cle was pro­nounced dead at the scene.”

Po­lice be­lieve the Vaux­hall Corsa was trav­el­ling out of Peter­bor­ough, to­wards the Lynch Wood Busi­ness Park, when it moved over to the right-hand-side of the sin­gle car­riage­way road and into the path of the lorry, which was head­ing to­wards the city cen­tre.

Speak­ing at the scene, In­spec­tor Nick Church said: “There has been a two ve­hi­cle crash be­tween a lorry and a car.

“For rea­sons which we are look­ing into, one of the ve­hi­cles has crossed the white line in the mid­dle of the road and col­lided with the other ve­hi­cle.

“Sadly this has re­sulted in one fa­tal­ity. I am un­able to re­lease fur­ther de­tails about the vic­tim at this time.”

Po­lice closed the road be­tween the round­about at Or­ton Wis­tow and the Lynch Wood Busi­ness Park round­about for sev­eral hours while they took pic­tures and con­ducted their in­ves­ti­ga­tion at the scene.

Both of the ve­hi­cles were also re­cov­ered.

The road clo­sure caused mi­nor de­lays to rush hour traf­fic, with mo- torists be­ing di­verted through Or­ton Wis­tow.

Sergeant Lyndon Pick­ston, who is in­ves­ti­gat­ing the crash, said: “I would like to hear from any­one who wit­nessed the col­li­sion.”

The tragedy comes just two days af­ter an hor­rific ac­ci­dent on the Nene Park­way, which left one man se­ri­ously in­jured.

The 36-year-old re­mains in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion at Ad­den­brooke’s Hos­pi­tal, in Cam­bridge.

The crash hap­pened near to Junc­tion 32 on the Nene Park­way, where it meets Oun­dle Road, at Or­ton Longueville.

The sin­gle-ve­hi­cle ac­ci­dent took place at 7.44pm on Sun­day and saw the driver’s blue Ford Fi­esta come off the road be­fore strik­ing a lamp­post.
