POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was attacked in the street.

The 25-year-old victim had been walking along New Road in the direction of Oundle Road, Peterborough, at 1.45am on Sunday when he was approached by two men.

He was repeatedly punched but managed to break free from his attackers and fled.

A police spokeswoman said the man was “lucky” to escape with only minor injuries following the attack.

She said: “We have put out leaflets to householders appealing for information. We do not want to alarm people but we do want residents to know we are working in the area to find the people respon- sible.

“It is important people contact police if they have heard or seen anything.”

Investigating officer Detective constable Louise Spinks said: “ We would like to hear from anyone who saw the assault take place or anyone who has information about who may be responsible.”

A 22-year-old man from Peterborough has been arrested in connection with an assault and has been bailed to appear at Thorpe Wood Police Station on June 28
