FEARS are growing that the city’s new fountains could become a health and safety disaster for businesses.

During the warmer weather a fortnight ago, children were playing in the water feature, before running into the surrounding Cathedral Square shops.

However, assistant manager at Greggs Gemma Davies said: “We’ve had children running in, drying themselves under the hand dryers.

“From a health and safety point of view it’s difficult for us. Any shop would look at it in the same way.”

HMV assistant manager Chris Sharp also said it would affect whether people would spend their money in the store.

“When children are coming into the shop wearing their bathing costumes, they don’t have a pocket for a wallet,” he said.
