Rowers bag national gold
A PAIR of teenagers have grabbed gold medals at a national rowing competition in just their fourth outing as a team.
Oundle School pupils Lottie Birks (16) and Kristina Cowley (15) rowed their way to victory at the National School’s Regatta held at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham.
By grabbing first place, the oar-some pair brought home the Simon Sears’ Cup for Junior Under 16 Girls’ Double Sculls.
Kristina said: “Winning the gold medal after only four outings as a team was a very surreal and a fantastic moment that I will remember for years to come.
“We were told that the commentator had said, ‘Cowley and Birks are looking composed and calm as they have done from the start’ but the reality was that I was really anxious not to let Lottie and the team down.
“In the last 500 metres, with the whole boat club shouting encouragement from the bank and seeing Christ Church have a final push, I think we just wanted to win that bit more than they did.
“It still took every ounce of energy, determination and willpower to cross that finish line first though.”
Head of Rowing at Oundle School, George Maitre said: “This was a very confident performance and with very little preparation under their belt.
“The girls won the initial time trial, semi and final with ease.”
