Elton Furze are county kings
ELTON Furze could be on the cusp of a summer to remember after a terrific showing at the Cambridgeshire County Championships.
Although no player from the club was able to stop reigning champion and Cambs county king, Lee Yearn, completing a hat-trick of titles over the weekend, Elton did manage to claim the team title.
The awesome foursome of Jody Greenall, Ed Conduit, Adam Pike and Matthew Whitwell all delivered solid performances with Elton club champion Conduit the pick of the bunch in third place with a level par 288 finish for four rounds.
Slightly further down the field was Greenall in ninth, a position the former county champion had hoped would be rather higher bearing in mind his past form at Saffron Walden.
He said: “We were obviously delighted to have won the team event but of course we were all hoping to do a little better in the individual competition.
“Personally speaking I travelled with high hopes as I won the county title there back in 2004 but over the first two rounds I was just a bit off the pace, although I would still have expected to finish higher individually.
“But the best team award is a great consolation for all of us. It is given to the best three players over the first 36 holes and come the afternoon on Saturday we all knew that we had a great chance and with Ed in particular playing so well, we managed to bring it home for the club.
“The team we have down here at Elton is very strong and I think that our result over the weekend just un- derlines that fact.”
With Greenall, Conduit and Pike all now playing off plus one, there is no doubting the quality of Elton’s top string who have plenty of other targets lined up this summer.
The Cambridgeshire Scratch League still remains within their sights while a semi-final spot in the Goddard Cup offers another route to silverware.
“We are half way through our scratch league season and while it will be tough to catch the leaders Ely, we still have a chance to do it with a number of home fixtures coming up,” added Greenall.
“In the Goddard Cup we have Girton at Abbotsley which is the same format as the Anglian League county games with foursomes in the morning and eight singles matches in the afternoon. To win it we will need good performances from everyone in what will be a bigger team but we will be going into it with a lot of confidence following our result at the weekend.”
