Sophie plays starring role for Lincolnshire ladies
GREETHAM’S top girl Sophie Beardsall was in red-hot form as Lincolnshire blitzed their way to the English Women’s Golf Association Midland North county title.
Played at Kenwick Park last week, the five-time club champion and her county team-mates crushed their opponents to book their place in September’s English Counties Championship final.
In fact the Lincolnshire ladies were in such dominant form on home turf at Kenwick, they managed to set a new competition record of 37 wins from 45 matches, irresistible form which saw them clinch back-to-back titles for the first time ever.
After a tight 5-4 win against Staffordshire on the opening day, wins against Leicestershire and Rutland, a whitewash against Shropshire and an 8.5-0.5 win against Nottingham set the local lasses well on their way.
And just for good measure Der- byshire were given a good pasting too, losing 8-1 in the final round last Friday as the home side cruised through to this year’s finals which will be held at Kedlestone Park in Derbyshire.
And having ended their 20-year hiatus from the finals last season when coming third, Beardsall hopes to at least match that this time round.
She said: “We all played really well and after a close game on Monday, we really hit top form and by Thursday we were home and dry but the win against Derbyshire gave us 37 points out of 45 which is a wonderful effort from the whole team.
“We know it will be tough at Kedlestone Park but we are really looking forward to it. Last year having not played in the national finals for so long we had no expectations but this time round we have more experience so anything better than third would be great.”
