HUNDREDS of people helped a Stanground primary school raise more than a thousand pounds at their annual summer fete.

Oakdale Primary School, in Oakdale Avenue, Stanground, held its summer extravaganza on Saturday to raise money for extra resources for pupils.

The event, which was organised by the Friends of Oakdale School Committee and had a World Cup theme, was a huge success, raising £1,800 in the process.

With the three-week football tournament now in full swing, the event featured specialist foods to represent a number of the different nations taking part.

Staff also got in on the act by wearing an array of football shirts. The event also featured a host of activities, including inflatable games, pony rides and a ‘beat the goalie’ challenge.

Headteacher, John Yardy was delighted.

He said: “It went really well. There was an excellent turnout and the weather was really good to us.

“There was a really good family atmosphere to the whole event.

“We had different foods for different nations, like pizza for Italy and our barbecue was for USA.

“The World Cup has been a really big thing in school, with each class designated four teams which they follow in the tournament.”

However, rather than resting on their laurels after another successful year, preparations are already under way to make next year’s event just as fun-filled.

The school will also be working out how to spend the money raised this year, but it is expected to be pumped straight back into equipment for pupils to use.

Mr Yardy added: “As soon as we finished last year, we started looking at this year. So it’s a year in the making.

“We have a very active Friends of Oakdale School Committee and we will start meeting in a couple of weeks to review what we did well and the things that didn’t do as well as we thought they would.

“We raised a total of £1,800 in profit on the day. That will go towards school resources for some new items for the children, like quiet reading areas.”
