Fun-filled fete proves success

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph - - NEIGHBOURHOODNEWS - By NICK REINIS

ORGANISERS of an action packed fun-filled summer festival have hailed their event a success.

The annual two-day Festival on the Green was blessed with sunshine when it took place last weekend in Botolph Green, Orton Longueville, for the fourth successive year.

Hundreds of people packed onto the green for a host of activities, including live music performances, stalls and children’s entertainment.

It also featured a showing of England’s first match of the World Cup, with the fixture against USA beamed live onto a big screen in a marquee for 250 people to watch.

John Sharman, festival committee chairman, said: “We were blessed with sun on the Saturday and it was really lovely.

“We filled the green with stalls, so many that they overflowed in some areas. It was an excellent afternoon of entertainment.

“Then we had the football in the evening and there was just over 250 people here to watch it. “

The screening was followed by a dance.

On day two of the event, the city council’s youth service came in and ran a fun activity programme for eight to 13 year olds.

Mr Sharman said: “There was only a few shots of rain so we were very pleased.

“It was the best one yet because the weather was great and we improved a few things from last year, so the committee are very pleased.”

The festival was funded by the Festival on the Green committee and £3,000 from the community leadership funds of Orton Longueville and Orton with Hampton.

Mr Sharman added: “We thought it was a really good way to spend the councillors’ money for the community. Without that money we would be struggling. The football was really expensive to do, so we are not sure if we will break even.”

Plans are now already afoot for next year’s event to make it just as successful.

“We will be having a meeting soon to see how we can improve on this year, because you can always improve.”
