RIVER­FORD Or­ganic is a veg box com­pany which grows and delivers pro­duce lo­cally. Much of the pro­duce is grown on the farm at Sacrewell, just out­side Peter­bor­ough. Syn­ony­mous with sum­mer, the Bri­tish straw­berry sea­son is upon us. This week’s recipe of­fers a heav­enly mix of flavours as the sharp­ness of the rhubarb blends with the sweet straw­ber­ries. Did you know that the straw­berry plant is ac­tu­ally a mem­ber of the rose fam­ily? Straw­ber­ries are not tech­ni­cally fruit, but pseu­do­carps; also known as false fruit. Straw­ber­ries have been eaten since Ro­man times, when they were also used medic­i­nally to help with skin ir­ri­ta­tions and dis­coloured teeth. I have been told that if you crush a ripe straw­berry with a lit­tle bak­ing pow­der, brush the mix­ture onto your teeth and leave for five min­utes be­fore brush­ing you will end up with whiter teeth. Per­son­ally I think I’ll stick to en­joy­ing the beau­ti­ful taste! We’ve just heard that our Trav­el­ling Field Kitchen will be at Sacrewell for some ad­di­tional dates – July 1,2,3, and 4 in ad­di­tion to the orig­i­nal dates of July 8 to 12 and July 15 to 18.
