... by Riverford Organic’s Gordon Twigg at Sacrewell Farm.
RIVERFORD Organic is a veg box company which grows and delivers produce locally. Much of the produce is grown on the farm at Sacrewell, just outside Peterborough. Synonymous with summer, the British strawberry season is upon us. This week’s recipe offers a heavenly mix of flavours as the sharpness of the rhubarb blends with the sweet strawberries. Did you know that the strawberry plant is actually a member of the rose family? Strawberries are not technically fruit, but pseudocarps; also known as false fruit. Strawberries have been eaten since Roman times, when they were also used medicinally to help with skin irritations and discoloured teeth. I have been told that if you crush a ripe strawberry with a little baking powder, brush the mixture onto your teeth and leave for five minutes before brushing you will end up with whiter teeth. Personally I think I’ll stick to enjoying the beautiful taste! We’ve just heard that our Travelling Field Kitchen will be at Sacrewell for some additional dates – July 1,2,3, and 4 in addition to the original dates of July 8 to 12 and July 15 to 18. Tickets cost from £17.50 a head (£8.75 for 12 and unders).
